How Excelling as a Leader/Supervisor training helped Ngunya Jarjum
About Ngunya Jarjum
Ngunya Jarjum is a respected community services organisation dedicated to supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families and communities. As the organisation continued to grow, it recognised the need to invest in the capability of its newly formed management and leadership team.
Training Objective and the Challenges
Ngunya Jarjum’s management team comprised a blend of experienced staff who had risen through the ranks of the organisation, and individuals new to the company. While the team brought strong frontline experience and a deep commitment to the communities they served, the organisation’s HR and Learning & Development team identified a clear need to ensure every leader was equipped with a consistent and robust set of supervisory skills.
The key capability areas identified as priorities were:
Emotional Intelligence – understanding and managing emotions in themselves and others
Negotiation Skills – reaching effective outcomes through constructive dialogue
Leading Employees – inspiring, guiding, and developing their teams
Conflict Management – navigating and resolving workplace tensions effectively
Questioning and Listening Skills – communicating with intention and empathy
The challenge was not simply about delivering content – it was about creating a learning experience that would resonate with leaders at different stages of their journey, feel relevant to the realities of their roles, and translate immediately into practice.
A Tailored Approach
CTO Training Australia was engaged to deliver its Excellence in Supervision program, specifically tailored to meet the needs of Ngunya Jarjum’s leadership team. Delivered as an engaging, full-day face-to-face workshop, the program combined evidence-based frameworks with highly interactive learning methodologies.
Rather than adopting a traditional lecture-style approach, the program was designed around active participation, group discussion, real-world scenarios and practical tools that leaders could immediately apply in their day-to-day roles.
“The level of engagement and involvement with staff was fantastic – didn’t just stand at the front and speak. Flexibility of delivery to each individual.”– Veronica Jean Mandin, Ngunya Jarjum
